    Escazú History

    Escazú is the name of the second canton in the province of San José in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 34.49 km². The canton lies west to San José Canton and its whole territory is part of San José Metropolitan Area.

    Although the canton was one of the earliest established in the country, as the metropolitan area has expanded Escazú has become a suburban area on the west side of the national capital city of San José. It is delineated by the Río Tiribí on its northern border. The peak of Cerro Cedral in the Cerros de Escazú marks the southern limit of the canton. The canton's urban areas are home to 79.8% of its population. Children under the age of 10 account for 17.88% of the population, while 6.05% are over 65. The canton of Escazú is subdivided into 3 distritos (districts).

    History:
    Escazú was first mentioned as a canton in a decree dated December 7, 1848.

    The name "Escazú" derives from the indigenous word "Izt-kat-zu", which means "resting stone". The story tells of Indians traveling from Aserri(south of San Jose) to Pacaca (near Ciudad Colon), who used to stop and rest at this location, which was about half way between the two villages. The first inhabitants were natives from the Guetaras or Huaca tribes. By 1755, villagers were ordered out of Escazú and moved to San José by force. From 1796 to 1799 the church of San Miguel was built with the cooperation of the people that had already re-established at this site. By 1801 the population of Escazú reached 1,325. On May 28, 1920, the government of Costa Rica granted Escazú the status of City, head of the Canton (County) of Escazú.

    Popular legend tags Escazú as La Ciudad de las Brujas (the City of the Witches), leading to its municipal seal, a depiction of a witch on a broomstick flying over the surrounding mountains.

    Landmarks Local landmarks in the canton include the Costa Rica Country Club, the Multi Plaza Mall, and more recently, Avenida Escazú. Escazú is also home to several diplomatic missions, including the residence of the Ambassador from the United States.

    West of San Jose, you will find the famous canton of Escazú. Just 7 kilometers away from the capital city of Costa Rica, and at 1,101 meters (3612 feet) Escazú stand tall in the mountains. Over looking the Central Valle, do to the elevation; Escazú is the place to be. Surrounded by mountain, High quality Malls, and fine Restaurants, Escazu invite you to visit and explore.

    Escazú's: Name derived from the indigenous word, Izt-kat-zu, and its means "resting stone." The story says that the local people used to travel from Aserrí; to Pacaca, using this mountaintop as their stopping place for rest. Later the Escazú became known as La Ciudad de las Brujas, or "City of the Witches," this tradition derive from the local tradition of mixing herbs and spice blends to cure any disease. The legend says that Escazú witches were all good, because their powers were used for good.

    Today, Escazú is home to many foreigners and Costa Ricans that prefer to live in a colonial community, quiet and with beautiful mountains all around. You will find different areas that separate in three towns -- San Antonio de Escazú, San Miguel de Escazú, and San Rafael de Escazú.

    Día de los Boyeros, the Oxcart Festival, is celebrated in Escazu every month of July, this make very proud to all the farmers that still pull the traditional Oxcart. Many people from all over Costa Rica visit San Antonio de Escazu to witness the event.

    La Feria, is a traditional street market, where you can buy fruit and vegetables drinking agua de pipa (coconut milk), eat some refreshing copos (snow cones) and other traditional fare food, enjoying the traditional dancing and parades. The agricultural heritage and modern amenities is a great mix in Escazu, You can find a farmer walind down the hill, as well as luxurious country clubs and homes that are aimed toward the more expensive tastes of relocating because of a strong North American influence, many of the people that lives in Escazú speak English, that makes it easy to relocate and find your dream home.
